Verizon Droid Eris quick one day initial review - great but not perfect

Imag0018

I've used this phone and service for about a day and a half now, and I can say that I like it more than my previous iPhone 3G + AT&T combo.

The biggest difference is definitely the network. I am paying a lot more per month, but I am also able to make clear calls now, from places I normally couldn't before.

After snapping the attached photo, I hopped on the train drafted this email while chatting on Google talk with two people while underground. There was only reception in the muni stations,  but the phone handled that smoothly, letting me multitask and chat seamlessly regardless of when I had connection or not. It would just sync quickly while we had reception passing the stations.

Plus:
- the network is no joke
- form factor is thin and narrow enough to feel like a phone. Physical call and end buttons are useful too now that I actually use my phone to talk. I didn't really before, and always had a few thousand rollover minutes.
- great Google integration. Especially Google Voice compared to the experience on the iPhone or blackberry.

Cons:
- battery life is weird. I am still investigating to see if maybe one of the programs I am running drains battery like crazy.
- battery charges slowly. The iPhone was a recharging speed demon.
- a tiny bit slow. Especially compared to iPhone 3GS.
- Google Voice sound quality and lag kinda suck sometimes.
